An outsider looking in

Good people of planet earth. Welcome to my blog post.

My name is Kjersti and I'm a 23 year old girl from the west coast of Norway. This summer I have an intership with Tise, and I'm working as an interaction designer. My main task is to look at the process the user goes through when adding a new Tise. I also have smaller day to day tasks. In this post you'll get to know what my day is about, and how it is to be a designer in a team.

First, some information about me. Here I'm casually hanging with my Tise sign.

I just finished 2nd year at the study Industrial Design at NTNU in Trondheim. This autumn, I have to choose between digital interaction design and product design for further studying. So I was very happy to get an internship at Tise this summer. What better way to decide what direction I want to choose, than get a taste of one of them? And so far I like it! When I tell my friends I have an internship in a startup company called Tise, " as in advertise", they say: Who's Edward Tise?

I don't have too much experience when it comes to digital design. Industrial Design mainly focuses on product design the first two years. I still feel I'm of some use, I've made like 6 pots of coffee already. And also, I have some insight in user experience, how usability testing should be done, how it should not be done, and also I have some Adobe skills.

To keep this blog post somehow educational, I'll give you some top of mind UX-tips

  • During a usability test, never ask the user leading questions, questions they can easily answer yes or no to.
  • Don't tell the user what to do! Observe him while he is exploring your product.
  • Don't make the user feel stupid by pointing out what he's doing wrong...

And there's also somethings I know about design processes. Usually the designer spends ages on concepts, prototypes, colouring, post its, thinking, drinking coffee and then BAM BOOM KING PONG, it's due time and you don't sleep for days. Anyhow that's how I work, and usually it's a nice process.

And I'll teach you another thing about design. Actually this was an a-ha experience for me. It goes a little something like: Good design is beautiful, great design is invisible.

If you know what I mean.

The Tise team is a really great team. I'm very glad I get to know all these people, they're great company. Some of them even share my interests in Game of Thrones and gangster slang. And last weekend we went sky diving!

And here's a picture of one of my bosses, Eirik:

One of my day to day tasks so far was to design and order t-shirts for the marketing campaign Andrea and I secretly are planning. Here's the result:

I don't know if any of this made any sense to you, but truly, this is how it is to be inside my head. There's a lot of things going on, and not much of it makes sense. I guess that is what they call creativity. Next post I'll talk more about prototyping on paper and in Axure.

Live long and prosper.
